Introduction
The ships we see in Follow the Fleet are cargo ships, research ships, tankers and cruise
vessels.
Any ship that carries goods and materials from one port to another is called a cargo ship or
freighter. Cargo ships are usually fitted with cranes and other equipment used to load and
unload the cargo.
Research ships carry scientific equipment used to collect information about the sea, fish, the
ocean bed and the weather. Until recently, most research was carried out in Irish
waters by foreign research vessels but now the Marine Institute owns its own ships.
Ships that transport liquids such as petrol are called tankers and cruise vessels are
passenger ships.
