In this section we learned about the jobs that people in the merchant fleet do. We now know that the Captain is the person in overall command of the ship. The Captain is responsible for the safe navigation of the ship and for the safety and conduct of all other crew members. The Ship’s Engineer is the person who looks after all technical equipment and instruemnts on the ship Marine Engineers can also work in many other types of job. We know that the Cook is responsible for the Galley and for feeding the crew. The Cook must ensure that there are adequate supplies of food and drink on board at all times. The Seaman carries out a wide range of tasks including loading and unloading of cargo and looking after the deck equipment. |
