 LESSON 4  Ports

INTRODUCTION

IRELAND

There are many ports around the coast of Ireland. Here is information about just a few of them.

 Arklow
Arklow is a small port and ships longer than 82 metres cannot use it at present. Larger ships will be able to use it in the future.

Many fishing boats use the harbour and yachts often visit. General cargo is also handled there.

   Cork
Cork is Ireland’s gateway to Europe and is the fastest growing container port. Ship repairs are also carried out there. All kinds of cargo are handled and Cork is also a main site for storing oil.

The deepwater port and Ringaskiddy can accommodate the largest ships and Cork’s car ferry is the most modern in the country.

   Dublin
Dublin is Ireland’s premier port handling all kinds of cargo including oil, grain, coal, bitumen, fertiliser and liquid petroleum gases (LPG). Oil is also stored at the port.

Five ferry companies operate services to the UK every day. In fact, over half the cargo coming to and going from the port is carried in lories on the ships. This is called roll on- roll off.
