 LESSON 5  The Weather

INTRODUCTION

MODERATE BREEZE

In this condition there are very small waves on the sea. However they are probably getting larger and there are lots of white horses.

moderate

This is what the
weather looks like
on a moderate day
at
sea.

On land you will notice that
the wind is moving small
branches of trees and blowing
any loose paper around.

The speed of the wind is between 11 and 16 knots.

Remember that a knot is one nautical mile (nm) per hour.

A nautical mile is the traditional way of measuring distances at sea. It is equal to
1,852 metres. The word nautical (like the word maritme) means ‘to do with the sea or ships’.

Sailors call this Wind Force 4 because they use the Beaufort Wind Force Scale when they talk about the wind. We will learn about this in another lesson.
