When there is a strong breeze large waves,
about 3 metres high, begin to form. White
foam crests are more extensive and there is
probably some spray.
When there is a strong breeze
the sea looks like this.
The wind can move large
branches of trees and makes
a whistling sound when it
blows past in telephone
wires. It can be difficult to use an umbrella.
The speed of the wind is between 22 and 27 knots.
Remember that a knot is one nautical mile (nm) per hour.
A nautical mile is the traditional way of measuring distances at sea. It is equal to
1,852 metres. The word nautical (like the word maritme) means ‘to do with the
sea or ships’.
Sailors use the Beaufort Wind Force Scale to describe the power of the wind.
They would describe a strong breeze as Wind Force 6. We will learn about this in
another lesson.

Check the weather outside
Look outside and see if the branches of trees are
moving in the wind. If so, are they moving enough for
you to describe the wind as a strong breeze?
